Data Sovereignty & Lifetime Ownership
Why plain Markdown on your own disk ensures your intellectual capital outlives every cloud corporation on earth.
Cloud software companies thrive on keeping you fragmented and dependent. When your notes, tasks, and client files are trapped inside a closed proprietary database, they can double their subscription prices, degrade their free plans, or sell the company to private equity, and you are powerless to object.
Nowted is designed with a fundamental rule: you must always possess total physical ownership over your files.
Nowted•Local Disk Vault & Data SovereigntyZero proprietary locks. Open in any text editor 50 years from now.

The system of record is standard Markdown files in your local vault."
1. Plain Markdown on Local Disk
When you create a note or task in Nowted, it is stored as a standard .md Markdown file inside a regular folder on your machine:
- Zero Proprietary Formats: Headers, bold text, bullet lists, code blocks, and tables are written in open, universal Markdown.
- 50-Year Guarantee: If Nowted ceased to exist tomorrow, you could open your folder in any standard text editor on Windows, Mac, or Linux fifty years from today and read every single word.
- Your Own Backup Systems: Because your vault is a standard directory, you can back it up using whatever you already trust—your local Time Machine, an external USB drive, or private cloud storage like Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive.
We believe that the software you use to organize your life should feel like your own property, not a rented timeshare. Your vault is permanently yours.

2. Native Vault Encryption (libsodium)
For users who require extra cryptographic protection for sensitive projects, private journals, or client documents, Nowted includes native vault encryption:
- Strong Cryptography: Powered by libsodium utilizing XChaCha20-Poly1305 symmetric encryption with Argon2id password-based key derivation.
- Encrypted at Rest: Your notes and data are encrypted directly on disk and decrypted in memory only while your vault is unlocked. Without your master password, the raw files on disk cannot be read.
3. Importing from Your Existing Apps
Switching to a local-first system shouldn't mean abandoning years of notes, notebooks, tags, and attachments trapped in other tools.
Nowted includes native import options to bring your existing archives into your local vault:
- Evernote & Joplin First: Direct import support for Evernote (
.enexarchives) and Joplin (.jexbackups, database auto-detection, and Markdown exports). - Universal Markdown & Obsidian: Drag-and-drop or folder import for Obsidian vaults, Notion exports, and plain Markdown trees.
- 100% Local Conversion: All imports run entirely on your device, converting legacy documents into clean, portable Markdown with attachments preserved.
- More Formats on the Way: We are actively adding direct importers for additional note-taking applications.
For a full step-by-step walkthrough and screenshots of the import options, see the dedicated Import from Other Apps guide.
